Hot Water Baseboard vs. Steel Panel Radiators

Operation:

Baseboard- Water is heated in the boiler and then is forced through the copper tubing inside the baseboard housing. Attached to that copper tubing are aluminum fins. These fins will absorb the heat from the copper tubing through conduction. The air within the housing is then heated by these fins. As it is heated it rises up through the top of the baseboard and into the room (the hot air rises up because it is lighter than cold air). Cooler air is then drawn into the bottom of the baseboard and the process repeats itself until the room reaches the desired temperature and the thermostat is satisfied.

Panel Radiators- Water is heated in the boiler and then forced through the front and back (depending on the type of radiator) panels of the radiators. Attached to the inside of the panels are flutes or fins which absorb heat through conduction. Panel radiators have the advantage of providing two forms of heat to a room. First, like baseboard heating, air is heated by the flutes inside the radiators and then convection takes place. Secondly, the hot water passing through the panels will emit radiant heat. This emits a very comfortable heat when approached. The advantage of panel radiators is that when the water temperature is reduced, it decreases the overall BTU output but the percentage of radiant heat will continue to increase. Essentially, the water passing through the panel radiator may not be hot enough to provide adequate convection, but it will still be able to radiate heat outward into the room.


Cost:

Baseboard - The most economical option of the hot water heating mediums. It is inexpensive and easy to install, which is part of the reason why it has become so popular in the United States. It is a widely used product that all heating contractors are familiar with.

Panel Radiators - Panel Radiators are more expensive than baseboard, but are less than in-floor radiant heating systems. There are several different types of panel radiators available in the market; Single, Single-Single, Single-Double, Double-Double, and numerous other variations. The percentage of steel within the unit is what drives the price; the more steel the higher the product cost. The benefit to a higher steel percentage is that more steel allows for more water, which in turn increases BTUs. Double-Double panel radiators are the most flexible option, while still being economical choice. They are a good balance between price and BTU output. Panel Radiators' are still new to the United States, even though they have been utilized throughout Europe for years. It stands to reason that most contractors will not be as familiar with panel radiators as they are with baseboard.

Flexibility:

Baseboard: Baseboard is a pretty standard heating medium; hot water passes through a room and heats it. A heating system can be designed with multiple zones that will allow for more flexibility; for instance the bedrooms can be set as one zone while the rest of the house is another. The downside to this option is that putting a thermostat in every room would be difficult, and more expensive.

Panel Radiators: Most panel radiators allow for the addition of thermostatic heads. These thermostatic heads will convert each panel radiator its own zone. This means you can keep your bedrooms a little cooler and your bathrooms a little warmer.

Design:

Baseboard- Baseboard units are very limited in design, as baseboard is a very simple house placed over copper pipe. It is installed around the perimeter of a home, which reduces the wall area for furniture placement and overall room design. Placing large pieces of furniture in front of the baseboard can disrupt the convective currents in a home, resulting in poorly heated areas.

Panel Radiators-A 24" by 24" radiator is the equivalent to about 9 feet of baseboard. That means that you can free up about 7 feet of wall space with this single radiator. This greatly increases the ability to position furniture around a room. Panel radiators are also being manufactured with design in mind. They are very elegant looking and can fit into any home dcor.

Conclusion:

Steel Panel Radiators are the better product when it comes to design, flexibility and operation. They are more expensive with respect to initial cost, but overall the operating expense of your heating system will be less then would be expected with a traditional baseboard system. The push-up is the original bench press and is a common exercise in many fitness routines. It's particularly useful in large physical education classes where weight-training equipment isn't available.

However, once students do use weight training equipment, they're often reluctant to go back to the old classic push-up. Why? Because they don't know how much weight they're lifting in a pushup and can't compare it to their weight training routines.

So here's a simple way to calculate how much your students are lifting when they perform push-ups. It's a great way to combine math and fitness in your curriculum.

METHOD

Studies have been conducted in which push-ups were performed on force plates. They indicated the following:

1. Women performing traditional push-ups lift the equivalent of 71% of their body weight. For example, a 120 pound woman lifts about 85 pounds.
2. Men performing traditional push-ups lift the equivalent of 77% of their body weight. Thus, a 150 pound man lifts about 115 pounds.
3. Modified push-ups, performed with the knees on the ground rather than the feet, reduce the amount of weight lifted. Women lift the equivalent of 55% of their body weight, while men left about 56%. So a 120 pound woman lifts about 66 pounds and a 150 pound man lifts about 84 pounds.

WHY THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SEXES?

These percentages are only averages, but there is a reason for the difference between males and females. Men usually lift more of their total body weight during push-ups than women because they tend to have more bulk in their chest and shoulders. As a result, more of their weight lies directly over the arms when performing pushups.

In contrast, women tend to have a lower center of gravity, with their weight centered around the hips and thighs. Since this weight is located below the position of the arms, less force is required to lift from a pushup position.

However, this varies widely, depending upon the individual. Large-chested women will lift percentages of body weight similar to that of men. And men whose body weight is centered in their hips and stomach will lift percentages of body weight similar to that lifted by women.

HOW TO TEST YOURSELF - A MATH EXERCISE

You can use a bathroom scale and some math calculations to determine the percentage of body weight each student actually does lift when performing pushups. It's a great way to combine your physical education and math curricula.

With the scale resting on a hard surface, have your students assume a pushup position with their hands resting on the scale. Record that weight; then their weight from a modified pushup a position; and finally, their full weight as measured from a standing position.

Then have them calculate the percentage of their body weight they'll lift when performing push-ups. They do this by dividing the weight recorded while in the push-up position by their full body weight.

For example 150 pound student whose push-up weight was 110 pounds will be lifting 73% of their body weight when performing push-ups. (110/150 = .73)

    Hello I am going outdoor camping for a week with some family and friends (6 nights)and will be deep in the woods with no power.       Why not enjoy the experience of camping in the deep woods without all the electrical gadgetry? If you plan on using traditional lights you are going to need a 12v car battery plus the inverter. The car battery might be a little heavy in the back pack but if you're a big guy, no problem. Even with a solar panel you still need the battery for storage. (actually you could probably get by with a motorcycle battery). Depending on the part of the country you live, there are probably fairly remote places where you can drive in and have your car near by for a source of power for your gizmos.

Plants take up nutrient elements from the soil through their roots. Plants need nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in large amounts; very often, these elements are not available in adequate quantities in the soil. Other essential nutrients such as boron, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, sulphur, zinc and others are needed in smaller or trace amounts, and these are often adequately available. If nutrient elements, along with water, are not available in adequate quantities at the time the plant needs them, growth and development will be affected adversely.

Biological farming systems make nutrient elements available in the soil through judicious management of nutrient cycles. One important goal of a biological farming system is to provide essential nutrient elements to crops by maintaining or increasing soil fertility with the use of plant residues, animal manure, legumes, composts, green manure cropping, crushed rock minerals and other natural inputs. Supply of essential trace elements and minor nutrients comes from wood ash, crushed minerals and the release of inorganic nutrients already in the soil through biological additives.


Organic matter benefits the soil in many ways: improving soil water-holding capacity; enhancing soil structure; binding and releasing mineral nutrients; serving as food for microorganisms that recycle soil nutrients; and being mineralised to nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur. Reserves of essential plant nutrients are created with the flow of mineral nutrients between living and non-living components of the soil.

Nitrogen is made available by raising legumes in rotation with the regular crop. Unlike inorganic fertiliser nitrogen, leguminous nitrogen is steadily and gradually released throughout the cropping cycle if temperatures are sufficiently high to allow microbial action. Different legume species and cultivars fix different quantities of atmospheric nitrogen. Management practices and physical factors are also significant determinants of nitrogen-fixing, and these include soil pH, temperature, drainage, the timing of harvest, and the turning under of foliage for green manure.

Phosphorus does not leach as readily as nitrogen, but in acid or alkaline soils it easily converts into forms not immediately available to plants. The amount dissolved in water determines phosphorus availability for plants. Organic farmers may apply rock phosphate instead of acid-treated phosphate to their fields. However, rock phosphate is significantly less effective than acidulated phosphate. It is possible in some areas to defer application of acidulated phosphates for several years. Manures and organic wastes can be applied to partially replenish phosphorus, but replacement applications of rock/acidulated phosphates will eventually be needed. It is not possible for a farm to attain self-sufficiency in phosphorus.

Potassium in immediately available form is usually present in adequate amounts in subhumid and arid regions from weathering of minerals. Humid regions and highly organic soils may need regular replenishments of potassium. Some forage crops (e.g. alfalfa and clover) take up large amounts of potassium, thus the hay or silage should not be harvested but turned under for green manure. Leguminous forages have potentially high levels of this nutrient; this implies that manure from animals consuming such forages should be conserved and returned to the land, for use by the next crop.
