      I believe photovoltaic panels are hovering at around 14% efficiency right now - when you see high numbers like 41%, that's an exotic cell, and not in a sturdy glass and metal frame suitable for domestic use. But even at 14%, if they cost / watt, they would be a cost winner in a majority of US homes. Even at / watt today, they are a winner in some places, such as supplying the last few, very expensive kWh's on someone's bill. If panels got to / watt, even without any subsidies, people would be clamoring to connect panels - so many, in fact, that it would threaten the stability of the grid, and new architectures would be necessary.

      The light strikes the black coated metal tubes and the black coated backing, and is absorbed as heat.

      Part of this heat will radiate as infrared radiation, and much of this will leave through the glass.

      But a great deal of it will initially remain in the metal as heat.

      This heat will be partially transferred to the surrounding air, but because the glass stops the mixing of this air with the rest of the atmosphere, this heat will stay mostly contained within the solar panel.

      If the glass were not there, there would be a huge loss of heat into the surrounding air.

Beyond Building Energy Recall Inverters to Protect Customers

Beyond Building Energy, an Australian solar company based in West Burleigh, has issued a recall of Aero Sharp inverters due to present faults raising concern for customers safety.

In the best interest of the customer, the recall will occur immediately after system failures have left the company doubting its performance.

An internal audit revealed quality and safety issues present in the Aero Sharp Inverters.

It came to our attention during internal testing that the systems were not delivering the quality we advocate ourselves on and it showed to present possible safety issues in the future, said Beyond Building Energy CEO Craig Mallory.

Aero Sharp inverters are currently installed by numerous solar companies nationwide.

To ensure customers inverters do not pose a risk to the effectiveness of the systems operations, Beyond Building Energy will be the first to take action against the ineffective inverters.

This nationwide recall will hopefully prompt other installers of this product to warn their customers of the possible malfunctions.

The moment we were concerned about the future safety and quality of this product we decided to recall. Beyond Building Energy offers warranties that last decades and we need products to last a lifetime without faults and without placing unnecessary risks on our customers, we dont want another installation style crisis on our hands, said Mallory.

The company funded recall will replace the Aero Sharp inverters free of charge with the new fully certified TL inverter range over a six month period.

Though no serious incidences have occurred the doubt in its quality is enough to announce a full recall.

      If a western exposure is all you have, say a flat roofed row house, you can still mount them on the roof facing south. You want to avoid anything casting a shadow on them.

      Another option is post mounting them. Or construct an outbuilding whose main purpose is supporting the panels. Again- avoiding anythng casting a shadow on them.

      Hey Ofir, you need to subscribe to Home Power Magazine. It's the only periodical that gets into the nuts and bolts of what you are asking about. About 3 or 4 issues ago they did a comparison of all known commercially available solar panels on the market today. The list compares about 20 items, such as power output, warranty period, size, weight, degradation due to temperature and lifetime, and so on. Each issue they take something related to renewable energy, like inverters, wind turbines, charge controllers, and so on, and compare all the models available.

      We started subscribing about 12 years ago, and it's where I still get lots of my information today. Our home is now powered entirely by the wind and sun, so in our case it's been good research over the years. I don't know anyplace else to get the in depth information you are asking for, but I will list some other non profit sources below you can look for on the net, but you'd be better off to just go to Home Power and pay the annual fee, it isn't expensive, then you can research back issues at their website and read any articles in the past, including the one on solar panels.       Silicon is one of the most commonly occurring substances on earth. For pv cells it is refined to be virtually 100% pure. (Plenty of heat). Dopents are added to create either a surplus of electrons or a shortage of electrons. Making the final ingot produced either n type or p type respectively.

      Slices of p and n type ingots are placed together and electrical connections are made to each side. (Diodes and transistors are made the same way with much smaller surface areas.) In the presence of light an electrical current flows from one contact to the other = electricity.

      There are basically two types of silicon cells multicrystaline and monocrystaline. The later is more efficient and require more power to produce because they are manufactured from single crystals.

      Not all solar panels are made from silicon. Gallium Arsenide cells are even more efficient and expensive

      Most countries have sand that can be refined into high purity silicon. If it is lower silica sand it takes more energy. The white sands usually contain the highest levels of silicon and are usually the preferred source. Countries with large sandy coastlines are the best sources of this sand.

      As with anything if there is a buck in it, someone is going to get ripped off. If performed responsibly sand mining can have minimal environmental impact. It disturbs quite a small area which can be revegitated as the activity moves on. When driven by a quick buck it can be a disaster.

      Great answers here. Just to summarize, in order of priority:

      1) Reduce usage first. For every you spend on conservation, that's about less you need to spend on your solar system. It costs less to use less electricity than to make your own.

      2) Research solar hot water. Solar hot water is ~ 85% efficient, as opposed to ~20% for solar electric. You get a better bang for your buck installing solar thermal than solar electric.

      3) Install solar electric. Prices for solar panels have dropped dramatically this year as the demand in Europe has dropped and people are having trouble getting home equity loans in the US. You can get better pricing if you buy by the pallet (depending on the panel, 20 - 30 panels). You are right that you don't need to generate all that you use, and if you do steps 1 and 2, you'll be using less anyways.

    Is it ok to cut off plumbing roof vent pipes and allow them to vent under my solar electric panels?
    My solar installer says its OK to cut off these vent pipes in order to make for a clean installation of the solar panels. Will this create and problems?

      In most areas, you cannot cut the vent lines. The height is to assure the wind does not take the fumes back into the pipe and house. You could have the lines moved though.

      To get the state rebate, you must be compliant to local building codes, which means the NEC (National Electrical Code) in most places (see article 690 of the code in your library). The NEC says that you need the UL listing. Also, it must be a grid-tied installation, that is, displacing grid power. More info at

      The federal government doesn't specify UL listing. If you lived in an area that was lax about that, you would still get your federal rebate.

      EDIT: I yield to dave123. That's right, UL is not specifically required. But if you buy the cosmetic defect panels from sun-elec, they will have their certification removed. I know a number of people that used them, though, and never any problems. I'm not advocating breaking the law, but must say, when the inspector looked at our panels, he did not not look for the certification sticker on the panels. Our panels were factory prime, but nevertheless, no one checked.

      You need to keep in mind that as long as you are renting your electric from the public utility you are doing just that and renting. You can resale the solar electric system if you move or if you just want to sale it and get some of your money back if not 20 % extra. Then all the years you used the system was all free electric. So it is already viable as you put it. Anything other then buying a system would not be.

      Here is a thought. The housing market slumped and if you paid 150K for your home it is now only worth if you can even sale it about 100K. Not worth the money but people are still buying homes even if they are not worth what they are being sold for. And then the cars and trucks people buy will never pay for them selfs but people still buy them and spend extra the more wasteful the car is. So why does solar have to pay for it's self or prove it's self? It has many times over but because you can't drive a solar panel drunk and party out in the bars with it is is not worth the money. I guess the is just being human and a double standard.

      What about the big up front cost of solar? I remember a 20% up front cost when I bought my home and my car and it is the same 20% or less for a solar loan. Plus the value of solar is going up not down like with homes and a car is not worth but half what you paid for it the minute you drive it off the car lot.

      They are not where I live. Our grid power costs about 10 cents per Kilowatt-hour. The break-even point here is about 13 years (in 13 years I will have saved enough to pay back my investment). The problem is the equipment will all probably need to be replaced by then, so there is no real savings to me.

      Just go to your electric utility website and you can normally get all kinds of good information on sizing and up front cost, as well as estimated savings over time.

      In my state (Arizona where the sun shines almost every day), a fairly good system for a 2000 sq ft house has a total cost of about ,000-,000 installed.
